"chagoosh is Spence's nickname by his younger family members and bingo dawgs, his elders however, at an early age nicknamed him Mishoomis, meaning grandfather."
For over a quarter of a century, Chagoosh Media owner, Christopher Dean Spence—known in creative and digital circles as chagOOsh—has operated as a pioneering force at the crossroads of Indigenous media sovereignty, advanced technical architecture, and grassroots community empowerment.
Rooted in the historical and cultural heartland of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Christopher's life's work is defined by a relentless commitment to building the digital and physical infrastructure necessary for marginalized sectors to not just participate, but to lead in the modern technological landscape.
Christopher’s journey spans the defining eras of digital evolution—from the early days of mounting radio antennas atop First Canadian Place and witnessing historical media milestones, to launching independent transmission initiatives. His career is anchored by landmark contributions across national and international cultural spaces:
Pioneering Indigenous Broadcasting: Instrumental in the technical deployment and early infrastructure of independent Indigenous radio, including foundational work with Native Communications Inc. (NCI-FM), the historic launch of 106.5 FM (AVR) in Toronto, and community-driven initiatives like Streetz FM.
National Cultural Milestones: Present on the ground during historic moments of cultural self-determination, including the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) Grand Opening in Washington, D.C., operations at the George Gustav Heye Center in New York City, and the inaugural 1998 Aboriginal Voices Festival at Harbourfront Centre, where he helped pioneer early Cyber Powwow networks and overnight pirate radio streaming bridges.
Media Recognition: Honored as a "digital warrior" in a featured segment on APTN’s youth empowerment series Seventh Generation, and highlighted in the Toronto Star's B section for bringing the city's first Indigenous radio station initiatives to life.
Central to Christopher’s current writing, technical consulting, and digital architecture is the framework of the Quantum Cross—a conceptual bridging of binary systems (zeroes and plus symbols) that honors the deep continuity between material realities and spiritual heritage.
Whether managing complex hardware diagnostics, splicing vintage cables, configuring alternative operating systems like Linux and Ubuntu, or designing multi-part multimedia manuscripts like his upcoming four-part work Between Spirit and Silicon, Christopher approaches every system with the eye of a master technician and the heart of a community advocate.
Today, through Chagoosh Media, SpenceFM, and the ACUC Artisan Network-, Christopher brings this wealth of experience directly to organizations, communities, and institutions.
Driven by an urgent mandate to bridge the digital divide—in both physical access and deep, practical knowledge of Artificial Intelligence—Christopher offers specialized consultations, high-impact keynotes, and tailored AI deployment workshops. His mission remains steadfast: demystifying technology, securing data sovereignty, and equipping communities with the sovereign tools they need to thrive.
